A city more than a simple visit
Calcutta, as sentiment evokes – has been an idea that sheltered myriad expositions in varied forms. Perhaps, it was Charnock’s imagination, vision, and his commitment to the empire that transforming this malaria infested marshy swamp by the three adjacent villages – Sutanuti, Govindpur and Kalikata would let them erect the premier city in India. Of all the great cities of modern India, the city of Calcutta takes us to the bygone days to prove again and again that it owes its existence to the vision and commitment of one man. Now, it is evident that Job Charnock did not found Calcutta, but he was amongst the first few thinkers, who envisioned about the future of this city. This place had in fact, propped a very highly civilized society and had been an important trading centre, long before the first European settlers came down the Hooghly, where the city of Calcutta stands now. Although, there exists no such evident that can trail the logic of the nomenclature of Calcutta, but, the name from its past – Kalikata – bears its roots and the importance of the naming. It had been found that the place then called Kalikatah was an important religious centre due to the existence of a Kali temple in the adjacent village of Kalighat. The first literary reference to the site can be found, back in Bipradas Pipilai's magnum opus Manasa Mangala which dates back to 1495. Abul Fazl's Ain-I-Akbari dating 1596 also mentions about this place.
The three villages had extended along the river from Coolie Bazar, where the buildings of the Commissariat now stand in the vicinity of Prinsep’s Ghat, to Chitpore, but the proper English settlement was confined to the locality between Baboo Ghat, Eden Gardens, and a point about a hundred yards to the north of Clive Street. Surrounding it was the native portion of ‘Dhee’ Calcutta, and to the north was Sutanuti. On the south stood Govindpore, high on the riverbank and covered with thick jungle. However, while this was the outline of the then Calcutta, but what happened in the inner fabric of the city, made the east meet west. Nevertheless, such an intermingling channels of cross-cultural pockets never co-existed devoid of friction. You can have the glimpses, as you tread through arguably the largest books bazaar in the world. From the first university of Asia to the hub of all adda, from religious experiments to scientific calculations, from booksellers that deal in old and rare books to eateries that only catered to nationalists – you will gain insight on how religions, sciences, societies, technologies and individuals underwent a sea change.
Grab your chance to see all that went into the awakening of a new order. We are never quite affable with the commotions in our life or the place, where our life is dwelling. But, to escape this common cacophony, you need to take the alleys less treaded. And if you are ready for this new experience, take a walk through the heart of the city’s quaint North Calcutta. Commonly known for its family’s annual Durga and Kali puja, the famous Chatubabu Latubabur Bari is the place where the labyrinth of the back alleys will take you to the Nayan Chand Dutta Street, through the narrow lanes that will evoke the age old feelings of being in the most ancient city in the world – Benares. On both sides there will be countless houses standing closely, without any gap, with courtyards and slatted windows. Some of them would be standing silently for over 200 years with wooden pillars, since they had been constructed when iron had to be imported from Britain. And then the imposing house of Mitra family with a Thakur dalan, will transform your vibes to a very different world, the world of Zamindars.
To transform the image of the city in you, keep walking, crossing Dorjeepara and Ram Narayan Bhattacharya Lane, to arrive at Tulika Art and Culture School of 1930s vintage with its grand teak staircase and wooden ceilings. However, do not miss to savour the hot kochuri and sweet malpua at an eatery in Hari Ghosh Lane, next to which you will find a 300-year-old temple, Sovabazar Natmandir, shrouded by trees on one side. It will be a truly classic experience waiting at the end of the alley. After all, what will linger is the taste of time travel in a unique part of Calcutta that had been explored by many, time and again, but remained only in the dampness of the alleys – waiting to be explored. The Hooghly that glided down to around the place where Calcutta now stands and then flowed through the Adi Ganga, past Kalighat, Baruipur and Magra to the sea, is now all nostalgic. The Adi Ganga that brought the European settlers to Calcutta is now nothing but a dying water channel. However, what has not changed is the nature of the city, Calcutta which is still an ideal place to experience the mild, fruity tang of Bengali cuisine. Friendlier than India’s other metropolitan cities, Calcutta is a city, where you will feel more than a simply visit and a trip to remember.
