Sikkim, Gangtok, Pelling Tour Packages

Book the best tour packages of Asia’s last great unknown - Visit North Eastern India

Hovering on the farthest brink of India’s map, as per the popular perception and culture, the Northeast States are one of Asia’s last great unknowns. Sharing borders with Bhutan, Tibet, Myanmar and Bangladesh, these remote frontiers are a collision zone of tribal cultures, climates, landscapes and peoples. It is a region of rugged beauty and wonderland, where glacial rivers flow through plunging Himalayan gorges. It is the wonderland, where faith moves mountains on the perilous pilgrimages to Tawang and Pemako. It is the last retreat for the iconic Indian one-horn rhinos, once which grazed through the great wilderness of the entire Gangetic Plains, now curbed to graze in Kaziranga's swampy grasslands.

It is the great unknown of the Eastern Himalaya, where the former head-hunters of the virgin Northeast, slowly awake from their opium-soaked dreams to embrace the approaching modernity, in their primordial longhouses. The morass of hilly forests, preserve mysteries and miracles, where traveling is challenged by the nature itself, with hordes of raw adventures, to make you feel truly rewarded. The laid-back and happy-go-lucky Northeast is mostly a handy sprawl of urban habitation, scattered with patches of forestry. True to its nature, the region branches along the rash ridges of mountains, with steep tiers of hillsides descending down. It is worth lingering for a few days to soak up with the local culture and fall in love with its relaxed being.

Itinerary:

Day 1:

To have your ticket to the laid-back and happy-go-lucky capital of Sikkim, be at the New Jalpaiguri Station or Bagdogra Airport to avail TTC envoy, who will assist you in transfer and check in at the hotel in Gangtok. Refresh yourself to get rid of the long winding climb to the hill top city, to venture out in the evening at The Mall, located on the M.G. Marg – a pretty district bedazzled by the shoppers, lovers, diners, all clad in the fusion of the native fashionistas. Stay overnight in your hotel at Gangtok.

 Day 2:

After breakfast set out to travel 24 kilometers from Gangtok, at an altitude of about 1,500 metres, to climb at the gompa of Rumtek Monastery that harks amidst the nature to lift your spirit to the tranquility of above all else. Erected under the direction of Changchub Dorje, 12th Karmapa Lama, in the mid-1700s, the monastery, else known as Dharmachakra Centre, was rightfully reclaimed by the nature, until the 16th Karmapa rebuilt it in 1959. The highest seat of Karmapa in exile, today slumbers by the flowing streams, behinds the mountains, with a snow range in front, and a river below.

Continue you spiritual journey to the North Sikkim highway to reach Tashi View Point. From the shoulder of Mother Nature, get the breathtaking view of Mount Khangchendzonga and Mt. Siniolchu, some of the most graceful peaks in the world.

Invoke the Buddhisattva in you, as you turn the 108 sacred prayer wheels or the Mani-lhakor, with the chanting of Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus, in one of the most important Stupa in Sikkim, Do-Drul Chorten Stupa, built by the venerable Truslshi Rimpoche, head of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism, in 1945, which houses the complete Mandala sets of Dorjee Phurba around this Chorten.

Absorb the holy frequencies, as you stop by the Nam Nang View Point, ideal for a leisure walk from Sikkim Legislative Assembly area to Sikkim Press, with an enthralling view of the dense forest and lush green valley by your side.

Hop into the Damodar Ropeway cable car to slip into the park, with a majestic view of the town beneath, to access the prodigious museum, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to unveil a jaw-dropping collection of artifacts on Vajrayana Buddhism and Tibetan Culture. Time-honoured since 1958, the museum that promoted scholastic and cultural research, displays Buddhist manuscripts, icons, thangkas (religious paintings) and Tantric ritual objects, such as a thöpa (bowl made from a human skull) and kangling (human thighbone trumpet) in its ground-floor. A Tibetan-style mansion, worth exploring.

As you drive from the Enchey Gompa, the northward road will swing to collect some prayer flags, where you will find a footpath scrambling up in around 15 minutes to Ganesh Tok viewpoint, Festooned in colourful prayer flags, with an wide open view to the horizon, will also offer you hot tea and Indian snacks from its minicafe.

Little ahead, around 2-km drive, the impressive Hanuman Tok viewpoint sits at the hilltop. This can be reached through a short trekking. It is one of the finest view of Gangtok from above, beside the main route to Phodong.

While coming back, stop by the Handicraft Industry and Tibetan Museum to delight your eyes and revive your senses in the mystic and vibrant designs of Eastern Himalayas, and the invaluable monastic artifacts of the Vajrayana and Mahayana Buddhist Orders. Overnight stay in hotel at gangtok.

Day 3:

After having a soulful spiritual and natural experience, have a filling breakfast, leave for Pelling, for its raison d’être of stride-stopping view of Khangchendzonga at dawn, of course, if the weather permits. The otherwise bland town with its 2-km main stretch of thoroughfare is unsurprisingly noisy with vehicles and hordes of tourists. Charm your senses, amidst the natural beauty of Pelling, notably at the 180 degree turnaround of the main road, from Geyzing to the upper Pelling. From the same point turn south southwest to the tourist office and the helipad, a magnificent panoramic viewpoint at dawn. After a brief conversation with the nature, check in to your hotel, and stay overnight at Pelling.

 Day 4:

Have an early breakfast, and consider moving on, as the rest of Sikkim awaits you. Visit one of the networks of the human body in Sikkim’s topography. The Khecheopalri Lake, meaning, the heaven of Padmasambhava, has curative properties in its water. Explore the stillness around, surrounded by high wild hills, to sense the divinity of folklore morphometric that constructs Khecheopalri with two words - Khecheo means flying yoginis or Taras (female manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion) and Palri means palace, a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. Experience the lingering symbolism, as the legends say that Guru Padmasambahava preached to 64 yoginis here, and the lake emerged from the footprint of Goddess Tara Jetsun Dolma, which is her dwelling as well. The ancestor of all yogis, the great yogi Lord Shiva himself meditated in Dupukney Cave that is situated above the lake, putting the landscape in tranquil eternity.

From the sacred water body, move to Yuksom, a lovable, little, charming and unspoiled place with history behind. Spend some quiet moments in the first capital of the Kingdom Of Sikkim, the main trailhead for the treks towards Mt Khangchendzonga.

Before you leave the trailhead, drop by the Stone Throne Constructed that stands even today at Norbugang, which is now, a heritage site.

Also, known as the Yuksom Monastery, Dubdi is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which will slumber in its retreat to the historical limbo, as you head for the Kanchanjunga Falls. Drive back to your hotel for a relaxed evening, quiet dinner, and staying overnight in the hotel at Pelling.
