Basking in a splendid play of shadow on the snow-topped Nilkantha, Badrinath Temple appears almost lost in the shabby village that surrounds it. Sacred to Lord Vishnu, this vividly painted temple is the most easily accessible and popular of the char dham temples. It was founded by Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 8th century, but the current structure is much more recent. Below the temple are hot springs that reach a scalding 40°C and serve as a laundry for locals.
Nestled among Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, Badrinath is the most important sacred town in the Chamoli District in Uttarakhand. It is gifted with undulating peaks, natural beauty, hallowed ponds and picture book panoramas. All these make for an exhilarating place for travelers seeking peace and pleasure. It derives its name from the sacred shrine of Badrinath and it is the place where berries can be seen in abundance. The beautiful hill station is lying at an elevation of 10,800 ft above sea level on the banks of Alaknanda River. It is also a door to many trekking routes headed to peaks as Nilkantha. Apart from emerald beauty, it tenders superb opportunity for those who love adventure and exciting activities.
A scenic 3km walk beyond Badrinath along the Alaknanda River, past fields divided by dry-stone walls, leads to tiny but charismatic Mana Village. The village is crammed with narrow stone laneways and traditional houses of varying designs – some have slate walls and roofs while others are wooden with cute balconies. You can wander around and watch the village ladies knitting colourful jerseys or hauling loads of fodder while the men tend goats or play cards or carom billiards. Carpets, blankets, jerseys, hats and gloves are all on sale.
Just outside the village in a small cave is the tiny, 5000-year-old Vyas Temple. Nearby is Bhima’s Rock, a natural rock arch over a river that is said to have been made by Bhima, strongest of the Pandava brothers, whose tale is told in the Mahabharata. The 5km hike along the Alaknanda to the 145m Vasudhara Waterfall has a great reward-to-effort ratio, with views up the valley of the Badrinath massif jutting skywards like a giant fang. The villagers migrate to somewhere warmer and less remote – usually Joshimath – between November and April. Badrinath can easily be visited in a day from Joshimath if you get an early start, but it’s worth staying if you also want to see Mana Village and do any hiking.
