Mysteries of the staring giants
More than 2000 miles off the coast of Chile, the colossal rock structures gaze arrogantly across the windswept grass, to greet you to the land of Rapa Nui, amidst the endless expanses of Pacific. The staring giants pose an endless mystery to times and lives, as to who built them and what they are staring at for thousands of years.
Venture out in the vast empty expanses of the Pacific Ocean, where a relentless wind blows across the ancient volcanic rocks. Live a fleeting span of time in the haunting beauty of the bleak and lonely landscape that will present you with challenge to fathom, how the people who settled this island, established one of the most remarkable societies on our planet, evolving a richly experienced visual culture and dramatically metamorphosing their environment. Discover the essence of civilization with us, where the tiny island with its limited resources is a stark contrast to its majesty of the Stone Gods, in its desolated surroundings that has been felt as a warning from the history, for the planet as a whole. Experience the gravity of the ecological suicide, committed unknowingly, by a once sophisticated stone builder society, whose history is forgotten, and the treeless barren landscape whispers the warning from its past for the plant as a whole.
Although, in 1950s Thor Heyerdahl solved some of the mysteries of how the giants were carved and hauled into position, but the history of the race, who built them may ever remain under the shroud of the mystery. Take your chance to fiddle with the clues of the mysterious society, which reflects the human experience isolation on the planet, which further reflects the isolation in earth and space. However, on the lighter note, if you are dreaming of a trip to the moon, get a little foretaste of it by climbing the dead volcanic cones of Easter Island. Not only has the dot of land; completely forsaken our own hectic world, which seems so infinitely far away in the blue, the island will also, give an illusion of being on the moon; of course, a friendly little moon hung between the blues of sky and sea, with grass and ferns covering the treeless craters laying sleepily facing the sky, ancient and moss-covered, lacking the tongues and teeth of their fiery days. There are a number of these peaceful volcanoes in hummocks all over the island. They are green outside and green within. Now, the eruptions are so remote that at the bottom of some of the largest craters sky-blue lakes with waving green reeds mirror clouds flying before the trade wind. One of these waterlogged volcanoes is called Rano Raraku.
The lost men of the little moon seem to have been most busily immersed at work, inside the crater of this Rano Raraku. Now, you do not see them, but you will have a feeling that they have only hidden themselves away in sealed-up holes in the ground, while you walk about in the grass at your ease and absorb the careless beauty of the undone tasks. They have fled in haste from what they were doing, and Rano Raraku remains one of the greatest lost unknown behind us, a warning of the brevity of man and its civilization. The whole mountain massif has been reshaped; the volcano has been greedily cut up like pastries by the builders of the giants, although sparks will fly, if you try to test the strength of the rock with a steel axe against the rock. Hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of rock have been cut out and tens of thousands of cubic feet of stone carried away. And in the midst of the mountain’s gaping wound lie more than 150 gigantic stone men, finished and unfinished, in all stages, from the just begun to the just completed states. At the foot of the mountains, stand finished Stone God, side by side like an army of ghostly spirit, keeping a watchful eye to secure the mute moments of their bleak land and you may feel miserable and small to approach the place, whether on the horseback or driving in a jeep along the ancient roads, which the vanquished sculptors laid down.
