Take a trail to the far-flung stretch of Southern India, a small stretch of land situated near the holy town of Rameshwaram. The small town that lies along the eastern coast of the state of Tamil Nadu and south-east of Pamban, is officially known as Dhanushkodi, but colloquially, it is the Ghost Town of Rameshwaram that will put your senses on a very different dimension. Situated at the confluence of Mahodadhi (Bay of Bengal) and Ratnakar (Indian Ocean), the town is a small stretch of land of around 50 yards, which forms Palk Strait. Though, the town survived the deadly storm during the cyclone of 1964, but lost all its infrastructures and the railway line that connected to Pamban Railway Station, making it a ghost town – detached from rest of the world.
Dhanushkodi, in the proximity of Sri Lanka, will take you to experience the physical juncture, where the myth meets the reality at the Adam's Bridge, popularly known as Ram Sethu. This particular bridge, in its original form is made of limestone, which connects India with Sri Lanka. It is believed that this 30km long bridge was constructed by Lord Rama with the help of his vanara sena – the monkey troop. Witness the work of the legend, as per Hindu mythology, which says that after the epic war of Ramayana, on request of Vibhishana, brother of Ravana, Lord Rama used his bow to destroy one end of Ram Sethu, christening the place as Dhanushkodi, where Dhanush means bow and Kodi means end. Until the cyclone of 1964, Dhanushkodi was a flourishing pilgrimage spot, but now, reduced to an eerie place that can challenge the adventurer in you.
Dhanushkodi is easily accessible from the Madurai Airport, located 175 km away from the location. Additionally, it is 20 km away from Rameshwaram, which is connected with other major locations of the nation by both rail and road transport. However, you must keep in mind that it is not suitable to visit the destination during the monsoon, extending from July to September due the heavy rainfall. Winter season is the best time to visit Dhanushkodi, when the weather is pleasant and suitable to indulge in sightseeing. Here, the beach is one of the isolated places in the area, where you can spend your intimate moments, with yourself. Another major attraction is the Pamban Island and the cantilever railway bridge, sharing the same name, connecting the island to India's mainland.
