Unearth the old charms of Gomanta
Welcome to the hidden paradise, called Goa. A place, surrounded by pristine mountain forest to its east, and sand raked white beaches to its west. This emerald of India, harks to its historical limbo of almost 30,000 years. Set your foot, to the place, where the time itself, slumbers in its deep rooted culture, first literary referred in Bhishma Parva of Mahabharata as Gomanta – region of cows or a nation of cowherds, a sacred Hindu region during 9th century BC or 4th millennium BC. Ponder in between the lines of the Hindu scriptures – Skanda Purana - to know, how Parasurama created the place, for you to enjoy your laid-back moments in the easy allures of the Goan beauty. Explore the banks of River Kushavati, which still bears the traces of early human settlement on its rock art engravings, in Usgalimal of present day Goa. Soak in the serenity by the beaches, shoring its white sands beneath the sparkling waters. Sizzle up in the bounty of balmy shores, as the flavors of Lisbon meet the Konkan cuisine. Experience the undercurrent of the place that fetched radical changes with Aryan and Dravidian migrants amalgamated with the aboriginal locals and formed the Goan culture to embrace you at ease. Mingle amidst the 2 million to hug the solitary Portuguese history of 500 years, in its most exquisite self, bedecked in arty-decay of Mediterranean architecture amid the fading cry of Fado.
Itinerary:
Day 1:
As you reach Goa, TTC envoy will assist you with transfer facilities from Airport or Railways to hotel. Check in to your hotel and set your frequencies to explore Goa and its different lives-in-time. By the way, before calling it a day, experience the hour-long cruises along the Mandovi River, with a live band performing Goan folk songs and dances.
Day 2:
Have a nice day, as you explore the exotic North Goa, its beautiful beaches, possibly some of the best places in the world to be lazy, with palm tree groves on one side of the white pristine sands, and lapping of the gentle waves on the other, creating best of the beaches of tropical paradise of your imagination. Yet another name on the list of remote beaches of Goa is the "Ashwem Beach". Situated away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Ashwem beach is the nesting place for the olive ridley turtle which is a rare species.
Morjim Beach is another spectacle of marine species, a nesting and hatching habitat of the Olive ridley sea turtle, an endangered species.
Situated on the opposite bank of the Chapora River from Morjim, Vagator is a little more laid back, yet steep rave cultured beach, with dramatic red cliffs looking down on its shore and two fresh water springs within a stone's throw of the sea.
To the south of Vagator is Anjuna Beach, one of the first hippy haunts of Goa. Enjoy the trance, the parties held on the beach, along with its flea market, where you can buy the most bizarre things, from jewellery to devices.
As you move to Calangute, feel the clear difference amongst its beaches of north and south, where the north is a tumult of tacky souvenirs, and the south is relaxed and upscale, with sands more quitter and restaurants, more fancier.
Witness the time in history in the architectures of Fort Aguada, had taken so seriously, equipped for longstanding siege by the Dutch and others, with 200 cannons and vast underground water chamber to hold 10 million liters of drinking water. Standing on the headland overlooking the mouth of the Mandovi River, the fort holds a magnificent and successful position at a height, to watch the immaculate Sunset, with uninterrupted view from the bastion, both north and south.
Day 3:
There is far more to discover here than the exquisite pleasure of warm sand between your toes. Take your time to enjoy the hidden paradise of South Goa with its bounty of balmy sea shores from Panjim to Miramar. Move on to Old Goa, 9km east of Panaji on the course of the wide Mandovi, to spectacle the imposing churches and convents that remain in a city that was once so splendid and so powerful it rivalled Lisbon. Travel back in time, 1760, and picture the pious city, as it was, and the most glorious city in all of Asia – the Rome of the East – filled with ornate cathedrals soaring at heights unconceivable to most of natives on the subcontinent. Visit the revered site Lord Manguesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, who once manifested into a tiger. "Trahi Mam Girisha!” Oh Lord of Mountains, save me, as Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva cried out, Shiva returned to his normal self. However, “Mam Girisha” kept lingering through the time, and got abridged to Manguirisha, Manguesh or Mangueshi, especially with the Konkani Saraswat Brahmins of Goa. Visit the holy Mangesh Linga, revered by Lord Brahma himself on the banks of river Bhagirathi, which the early Saraswat Brahmins carried to Gomantaka and settled at Mathagrama, the present-day Margao, establishing their most sacred and ancient temple, on the banks of the river Gomati or Zuari as it is called today.
