The travellers who rages across the 4 million square miles of Canada may be overawed by the size of the challenge nature offers to man. But the Canadians glory in the struggle, ploughing enormous prairie wheat farms, blasting highways through the Rockies, and creating modern cities across a continent.
From San Francisco, fly to the north: out of the sunny city into the struggle with nature. Over Washington, when the rainstorm will begin and, below, the forests will come tramping down in endless wet armies to meet you. The sea turns grey, and it seems that it, too, had it forests, for when you will look out over the water, innumerable wooded islands, like schools of whales, nosing northward with you into dirty weather. The sea turns sallow and then ranks ochreish, where the silt of the Fraser River stains it far beyond its delta. Then, is a sudden vertical mix-up of mountain, cloud, sea, forest and long, Straight Street of bungalows and green lawns, you bump down into Vancouver. You are at the beginning of a journey from sea to sea across Canada, and the mountains stand like a lion in the path.
Are you in a new country? The immigration official with a Chinese face; the waiters at the hotel are Italian, German or Hungarian; there are Irish in the street. So far, you might still be in the United States. But small things shows you are not: that first hot, full-bodied cup of tea in the hotel, tea drink as a stimulant, not as a sedative; thicker, woollier clothes, provincial shops, an American accent softened by the quiet British intonation. A quiet, calm country, evidently not as rich as California. Anyone wanting to swear uses British profanities. The girls with the natural European look, rather than the American artifice. Smaller cars on the streets. An impression of restraint rather than exuberance; of tidiness.
In general, a mingling of British and American traits. One could say, outwardly American, inwardly British, yet perhaps Canada is the reverse of that. Perhaps Canada revealed to us? It is too soon to say.
From the beginning of their history, the inhabitants of northern America have had to accept nature-not the mild, friendly nature of Europe, but nature wicked, relentless and hostile. Until the great advance of modern technology, Canadians were locked in a grinding struggle with the climate, with exhausting distances and, at last, with the Rockies. The Canadian passes are almost insuperable; nature there is at her worst.
